Basic Computer Skills Instructor

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Groups can volunteer together at this opportunity.

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Description
Facilitate Basic Computer Skills course at one of our residential facilities in downtown Indianapolis. Must be available during weekends. Develop curriculum, with pre-test and follow up testing to determine student progress, keep class records, regularly communicate with volunteers and staff.
Notes / Special Requirements
Good working knowledge of computer basics (both hardware and software), experience in adult education a plus, or demonstrated group facilitation skills.

Front Desk Support Specialist

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Description
Answer phones, greet visitors, and perform various administrative tasks as needed. Great work environment; ongoing support and communication with staff; and proper training and orientation provided. This position is needed between the hours 10 am – 3pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 21- September 27 and Tuesdays and Wednesdays October 3 - December 11. It is possible to split the shift between volunteers.
Notes / Special Requirements
Strong verbal communication and effective interpersonal skills. This position will require a criminal background check, volunteer orientation, and a signed confidentiality agreement.

Resident Activities Coordinator and/or Assistant

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Description
Work with volunteers and staff to coordinate pro-social activities for residents at our correctional facilities in downtown Indianapolis. This may include but is not limited to Holiday parties, family centered activities, informational sessions, monthly birthday parties (one day per month for all residents with birthdays in that month), etc. This position can be maintained outside of our facility for the most part, may or may not need to be present during actual events depending on nature of event. Communicate regularly with staff and volunteers, attend occasional resident meetings to plan future events with their feedback.
Notes / Special Requirements
Ability to work with little supervision, meet deadlines, good communication skills are a must.

GED Prep Class Instructor and/or Assistant

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Description
Help adult students prepare to take the GED exam by leading structured class segments, following a curriculum designed for the GED. Conduct pre-tests and follow up tests to determine readiness, keep class records, provide outside work for students and timely grading responses. Must regularly communicate with other volunteers and case managers.
Notes / Special Requirements
Previous experience in adult education a plus, group facilitation, familiarity with GED requirements for the state of Indiana, good communication skills, must work in tandem with other volunteer instructors. Must be flexible, yet firm at the same time! Must be available during weekday evenings and/or some hours on weekends.

Movie Night Host

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

Description
Pop some popcorn, turn out the lights, and watch your favorite movie on a big screen! We are looking for small groups to host "Movie Nights" at Theodora House, a residential facility for women transitioning out of the criminal justice system. Our goal is to help women build positive, healthy lifestyles. Volunteers can help alleviate the stresses of readjusting to the "real world" by providing fun and relaxing activities for our residents!
Notes / Special Requirements
Groups perform all set up and clean up duties required, serve refreshments to our residents, evening (schedule permitting). At least two people in the group must be able to lift 20-30 lbs, necessary for carrying table top popcorn machine, and moving tables to arrange room. Men and women may participate in this activity; however, groups with males must also have at least one female member attend with them.
