Methodist Hospital opened its first hospital in 1908. Since that time, Methodist has grown in reputation and stature. In 1997, Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children united to form Clarian Health, which today operates 1,300 beds with more than 57,000 inpatient admissions and 900,000 outpatient visits per year. Methodist is known for its tertiary care and highly specialized services to treat those with severe medical emergencies and scheduled surgical procedures.

In recognition and honor of the United Methodist parishioners who founded Methodist Hospital, we are especially seeking 100 new United Methodist Church leaders and parishioners to begin volunteering in 2008.

Not a United Methodist Church member? No problem. We welcome ALL volunteers.

Volunteers are responsible for providing preeminent customer service to patients, families and staff.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Description
Volunteers assist both staff and visitors within the Methodist Hospital Medical Library with general responsibilities related to a library setting. Volunteers help visitors locate reading material relevant to their interest level, while also assisting the library staff with stocking, shelving, and organizing. Opportunity requires a high level of independence, self-motivation, working-knowledge of computers, and overall strong communication skills.

Ruth Lilly Hospice Program

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Description
The Ruth Lilly Hospice Program is designed to provide comfort and support services to patients, families, and visitors on the Ruth Lilly Hospice floor located in Methodist Hospital. Program participants are required to complete the general volunteer on-boarding process, plus a six-week hospice training program that serves to better educate the volunteer on issues pertinent to the program. Unit-Patient Liaison Programs

Description
Unit-patient liaison volunteers are assigned to inpatient units within Methodist Hospital to provide signature customer and support services to patients, families, visitors, and staff through a general desire for direct volunteer-patient interaction. UPL responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: rounding throughout the unit to check on patients, answering call lights and communicating the patient's need to the proper staff member, stocking unit closets, assisting patients with ordering Classic Cuisine menus, visiting with patients and families, preparing unit welcome packets, and performing various clerical duties related to the unit. Opportunity requires strong communication skills, self-motivation and ability to work independently, extensive walking, and a general sensitivity towards the appropriate patient-volunteer experience. Out-Patient Liaison Programs

Description
Out-patient liaison volunteers provide customer services to patients, families, and visitors, including but not limited to acting as a liaison between waiting patients and clinical staff, offering emotional support during scheduled appointments or treatments and directing patients, families and visitors to other resources within the facility, while providing staff with support services such as maintaining a steady flow of patients through exam rooms, maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms and waiting areas and transporting medical information and materials between clinics. Educational volunteer opportunity designed to provide measurable service learning opportunities within Methodist Hospital Emergency Department that will expose pre-pharmacy and pharmacy students of central Indiana to the obstacles facing hospital physicians and pharmacists with regard to medication reconciliation. Opportunity requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours of service.

Pet-a-Pet Program

Starts: March 1st, 2009

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Description
Pet-a-Pet program is designed to bring trained canine companions into the hospital to uplift the spirit of our patients. Volunteer applicants & canine companions are required to complete a three- to four-week handler training course, designed and coordinated by Pet-A-Pet coordinators. The handler training class meets once per week for three to four consecutive weeks. This program entails approximately six (6) total weeks of training (excluding the time spent in obedience classes required for candidate consideration) for the applicant and the canine. A minimum one (1) calendar year commitment is required for this program. Opportunity requires certification from a three- to four-week handler training course, temperament testing, and a one (1) calendar year commitment.

Clowning Program

Description
The clowning program is a program designed to uplift the spirit of Methodist Hospital patients, families, and visitors through volunteer clown visits. Volunteer clowns travel to various in-patient floors, most specifically pediatric floors, to visit with Methodist Hospital patients. Volunteer clowns provide their own attire and their own trick supplies, but are provided with room numbers of patients in need of an uplifting experience. Opportunity requires advanced communication skills, self-motivated personality, and an overall desire to uplift the spirit of Clarian patients, families, and visitors.

A program designed to provide signature-quality customer service and attention to Clarian Health patients, visitors, and families by making unit rounds throughout Methodist Hospital to reach out and enhance the health care experience. Volunteers push the room service-entertainment cart to various units, providing patients and families with coffee, tea, snacks, puzzles, and other forms of entertainment. Opportunity requires advanced communication skills, self-motivation, and extensive walking.

Description
Volunteer interpreters assist the Language Services department with interpretations for limited English-speaking patients and visitors within Clarian facilities, making confirmation calls, and document translations. Opportunity requires a minimum six-month commitment and a thorough assessment conducted by the manager of Clarian Language Services.

Description
A program designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities within Clarian Health facilities that will not only enlighten them on the importance of clinical interaction and clinical research, but will also provide for them a meaningful and measurable experience that will set them apart from peers wishing to embark on the same challenging medical and academic endeavors.

Chaplaincy Clerical Volunteer
