2012 Superbowl

Starts: February 12th, 2012

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Description
The National Football League announced that Indianapolis will host Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The league's 32 owners voted during the NFL Owners Meeting in Atlanta on May 20. The 2012 Super Bowl will be the first Super Bowl to be played in Indiana, and only the fourth in a cold-weather climate.

“We’ve known for a long time that Indianapolis is a Super Bowl city,” said Susan Williams, ISC president. “Today, the NFL owners made it official. This process began nearly 30 years ago with Indianapolis’ sports initiative. The 1987 Pan Am Games, world championships, Final Fours, and many other great events over the years put us in the position to win this crown jewel.”

Indianapolis’ bid will feature a large legacy piece, including the building of a $9 million athletic facility on the campus of Tech High School. The training facility will be used by one of the competing teams in the 2012 Super Bowl and then turned over to the Indianapolis Public School District for student use after the Super Bowl. This was part of the bid’s overarching theme demonstrating that Indianapolis was putting forth a community bid.

“This is great news for not only Indianapolis, but for the whole State of Indiana. The decision made by the NFL owners shows their recognition of the hard work of our team and the strength of our community,” said Mayor Greg Ballard. “This was truly a community bid. It began with a process of involving anyone interested in being a part of it, and ended with our 8th grade ambassadors flying all over the country to hand-deliver our final bid package.” Downtown Indianapolis will be transformed into a "Super Bowl Village" for Super Bowl XLVI. It will feature live concerts, warm zones, team units, and other local flavor, connecting to the NFL Experience.

Studies of past Super Bowl host cities show that Indianapolis can expect 100,000 visitors over the course of one week and an estimated $120 million direct spend into the local economy.
