Description
The MSD of Wayne Township's HOSTS program (Help One Student To Succeed) is a structured, mentoring program that provides early intervention for students who need help in reading. Reading is a gateway skill that impacts all aspects of learning. Helping students become good readers enhances their academic success and arms them with an important life skill.
HOSTS targets 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders in all eleven elementary schools (and starting in 2008-2009, HOSTS will target 1st or 5th graders at some schools). The goal is that all HOSTS students achieve reading “at grade level or higher” by the end of the school year.
HOSTS mentors choose where and when they wish to mentor. Typically mentors volunteer one hour a week, working with the same two students every week for one half hour each. Students and mentors meet together in the HOSTS room along with a HOSTS Instructor.
The HOSTS instructor prepares an easy-to-follow, personalized lesson for each student that covers literature, vocabulary and reading skills. These lessons are organized in an easy-to-use, three-pocket folder that guides the mentor and student through a shared learning experience. The HOSTS instructor is always with the mentors and students to provide support and assistance.
