Apartment Set-Up

Description
Do you have the heart of an interior designer? Do you love to organize and decorate? Then this might be the opportunity for you. When a woman or family moves into Coburn Place we want to ensure that their apartment is warm and welcoming. Volunteers assist us in doing that by stocking shelves with food, making beds with new linens, decorating walls, and outfitting the rooms with many essentials including pots and pans, silverware, towels and washcloths, toiletries and many other items.
Notes / Special Requirements
Detail oriented and organized person. Must have attended a general orientation session. Apartment set-ups are usually scheduled with only a few days notice so a flexible schedule is a plus. Many items for the set-up can be pulled from our donated supplies and although not required, many volunteers enjoy bringing brand new items such as linens, towels, etc. for the apartment.

Children's Activities Assistant

Description
Child care assistance is needed in the evenings to help the children’s program coordinator and her staff in conducting activities with children of various ages. Assistance is also needed for occasional outings, such as museum visits or other community-based activities.

Must have completed general orientation as well as children's program training. Responsible, patient, and friendly person. Experience working with children of all ages a plus. Must be dedicated to modeling non-violent behaviors and attitudes.

Children's Program Orientation

Description
Volunteering with the children at Coburn Place is a rewarding and challenging experience. In order to make it as beneficial as possible we believe that it is important for our volunteers to understand the impact that domestic violence has had on the lives of these young people. We therefore require that each person interested in working with the children at Coburn attend a special training session. This training session includes a discussion of the impact and consequences of domestic violence on children and training on ways to model positive, non-violent attitudes and behaviors.
Notes / Special Requirements
All volunteers must begin by signing up for and completing one of the bi-monthly general orientation sessions. If you think you are interested in working specifically with the children at Coburn Place, please feel free to sign up for one of the monthly children's program trainings that follows your chosen general orientation session.

Children's Tutors

Description
Do you have the skills and desire to act as a tutor for youth? Children of all ages at Coburn Place need tutoring in a variety of subjects. Duties include assisting children in the evenings with homework completion and study skills.

Donations Assistants

Description
Are you a great organizer? Do you have a limited amount of spare time but want to volunteer at a place that would really value your help? Assist our volunteer Donations Coordinator with keeping our donation rooms running smoothly. Responsibilities will include sorting, organizing, and distributing donations as well as completing inventories of donated items.

Must have completed general orientation. Organized and detail oriented. Ablility to follow written or verbal directions. Some bending and lifting may be required.

Front Desk Receptionist

Description
Coburn Place Safe Haven is a busy organization with staff, residents and visitors needing timely assistance with many issues. Responsablities include answering the phones, managing the security gates and doors, assisting residents, paging staff members and other miscellaneous office duties during daytime business hours. This position gives you the opportunity to assist in and learn about the daily operations of a transitional housing unit.
Notes / Special Requirements
Must have completed general orientation and will need to complete front desk training (please see the volunteer trainings section to sign up for training shifts). Should be someone who is able to multi-task and stay calm under pressure. Previous multi-line phone and office experience a plus but not mandatory. Must make at minimum a 3 month, 1 time per week commitment or a 6 month, 2 times per month commitment.

Front Desk Training

Description
Training for the front desk will include a reference manual, a hands on training shift with the Administrative Assistant, and 1 or 2 shifts assisting other front desk receptionists.

Must have attended a general orientation session and be willing to make at minimum a 3 month, 1 time per week committment or a 6 month, 2 times per month commitment.

GED Tutors

Description
Do you desire to have a lasting impact on someone's life? Do you enjoy working in a one-on-one setting? There are many women at Coburn Place who desire and would greatly benefit from attaining their GED. Duties would include assessing the woman's academic competencies and then creating and implementing a tutoring plan.
Notes / Special Requirements
A background in teaching, higher education, or GED prep is desirable. Willingness to commit to an ongoing, regular project is a must. Must complete general orientation.

General Orientation

At Coburn Place we believe that education and training are a key to a successful volunteer experience. We therefore require that each and every person interested in volunteering at Coburn attend a general orientation session. Come assist our Director of Marketing and Development with daily activities that could include maintanance of a media binder, media placement tracking, and grant research. If you are interested in this position, please speak directly with Cassandra Vore, the Community Resources Coordinator, after you have completed the general orientation session.
