Dinosphere Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Dinosphere
Activity: Dinosphere Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
All Dinosphere interpreters must work at least three of the following four zones.
1. Entrance Ramp – Welcome visitors to the gallery using a puppet and microphone, learn and share 8 Key Messages script.
2. Art Gallery – Maintain paper supplies and other art materials. Use casual interpretation to teach visitors about paleo art and art critique.
3. Demo Prep – Model fossil preparation. Talk to visitors about fossil prep technique (scripted). Requires training by the Collections Department.
4. Paleo Lab – Teach visitors about fossils using scripted programs.
1. Ability to engage and interact with all visitors, regardless of age or group size.
2. General knowledge about TCM.
3. Maintain order, safety and cleanliness in space.
4. Interest in dinosaurs and fossils (knowledge not necessary).
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to see and meet visitors.
2. Able to converse with visitors.
3. Able to hear visitor’s questions.
4. Requires extensive periods of standing (stool may be provided).
5. Some bending and kneeling required.
Availability:
Must be able to maintain a regular work schedule, minimum of 2 shifts per month.

Carousel Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Carousel Wishes and Dreams

1. Take tickets from customers.
2. Assist in crowd control.
3. Engage visitors in line with friendly conversation.
4. Be prepared to answer visitor’s questions about museum.
5. Some knowledge of Carousel’s origin.

Arts and Crafts Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Passport to the World, Playscape or Lanzendorf gallery and Dinosphere
Activity: Arts and Crafts Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Interact with visitors, teaching children and families how to create and explore with various textures and art mediums.
2. Engage visitors in various projects to learn the value of the process, not the product.
3. Help maintain order in the gallery space and monitor for safety.

3. Able to be independent in monitoring, presenting, preparing, instructing, cleaning up activities.

Exhibit Maintenance
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Entire Museum
Activity: Exhibit Maintenance
Essential Resposibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Assist in building and planning small projects throughout the museum.
2. Help in repair and maintenance of museum exhibit components.

2. Willingness to work in dusty, dirty and greasy environments.
3. Knowledge and skill in operation of hand and power tools.
4. Some mechanical skills needed.

Fossil Preparation
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Dinosphere Paleo Prep Lab
Activity: Fossil Preparation
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Removing rock from fossils.
2. Puzzling and gluing broken fossils back together.
3. Puttying in cracks and sculpting missing pieces of fossils.
4. Making molds of original fossils.
5. Making casts of fossils.
1. Use and storage of tools and chemicals in a safe manner.
2. General knowledge of the operation of the lab and the lab’s projects.
3. Proper usage for the different lab tools and chemicals.
4. Extreme patience and attention to detail to complete projects at a museum quality.
5. Good 3 dimensional puzzling ability.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to see fine differences in color and texture and spend long periods looking closely at specimens, potentially through magnification.
2. Able to converse with lab staff.
3. Able to receive instruction and advice, able to hear if tools are not operating properly.
4. Able to manipulate and position small fossils and fossil fragments, often with tweezers.
5. Some light lifting and bending.

ASAP (Administrative Support Assistance Pool)
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Volunteer Center
Activity: ASAP (Administrative Support Assistance Pool)
Essential Resposibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Provide a vital administrative support link between Volunteer Services and staff.
2. Provide clerical assistance such as addressing, labeling, assembling mailings.
3. Assemble press kits, teacher materials.
4. Prepare activity materials for visitors.
5. Assist in preparation of variety of materials when asked by staff.
1. Willingness to work with others in a team.
2. Ability to adapt to a variety of tasks within a days work.
3. Able to complete work following a sample.
4. Ability to be a problem solver.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to follow sample material or agree to assign tasks that can be done with minimum vision.

4. Able to use hands to complete tasks, such as cutting, sorting, folding, threading.

Family Volunteer

ScienceWorks Rockwall and Biotech Lab Assistant

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Rock Wall in ScienceWorks, Biotech Lab
Activity: Programs Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Assist staff as they present programs scheduled in galleries through the museum.
2. Set up space, assist with small groups within the program.
3. Assist children and families with rules, tasks, crafts, etc.
4. Maintain order in the space.
5. Help in the preparation of programs and breakdown of programs.

3. Able to be independent in prepare program space, present program, maintainance space and clean up.

Library Assistant

Hand Stamp

Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Provide exceptional customer service daily.
2. Maintain excellent knowledge of museum or be willing to learn.
3. Keep updated on new/current gallery information.
4. Welcome visitors and answers questions as hands are stamped.
5. Stamp visitors' hands for easy and quick re-entry.
6. Maintain a pleasant friendly manner.
7. Provide assistance to visitors as needed.
1. Ability to teamwork with other Visitor Relations staff.
2. Must consider the visitor as a top priority.
3. Must be self-motivated and work with little or no supervision.
4. Able to be flexible and adjust to frequent interruptions without disruptions in service to visitors.

Greeter

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Activity: Greeter
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Represent TCM as first contact with many visitors in their visit to TCM.
2. Able to achieve a pleasant, informative and efficient interaction with visitors.
3. Direct visitors upon entering the museum.
4. Answers questions, gives information.
5. Maintain excellent museum knowledge that includes information in regards to museum events, programs, activities and staff.
6. Assist visitors with special needs.
1. Must have a pleasant, enthusiastic personality and ability to enjoy interaction with visitors.
2. Ability to learn about the museum and keep up-dated on current museum information that includes events, activities, programs, galleries.
3. Provide excellent customer service on a daily basis.
4. Must be able to teamwork with other Visitor Relations staff.
5. Must be self-motivated and able to work effectively with little or no supervision.
6. Must be able to work with frequent interruptions without the disruption of service to visitors.
7. Must be aggressive in the approach of visitors to initiate pleasant conversation.

Greeter - Survey Position
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Welcome Center and Sack Lunch Area
Activity: Greeter and Survey Position
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
All Dinosphere interpreters must work at least three of the following four zones.
1. Conducts day to day group greeting/orienting and assists in sack lunch area operations.
2. Meets school groups at Welcome Center, assists group to their schedule events or to the entrance. Directs groups to sack lunch area if used. Continues in Welcome Center until most groups are checked in.
3. Goes to sack lunch area where he/she assists with check-in of groups. Talks to teachers to thank them, ask for feedback of visit, distributes materials (return coupons, etc) and teacher surveys.
4. Collects completed surveys, assists groups on exit. Says “Goodbye and thanks for coming.”
5. Provides excellent customer service; answers questions, problems, concerns. Helps solve any customer problems. Provides assistance to visitors who may need information on procedures, special needs once in the museum. Maintains knowledge of museum activities, events, exhibits.
1. Must demonstrate teamwork in working closely with school groups, teachers and museum staff.
2. Must be able to effectively handle customer questions and concerns with proper resources.
3. Must be able to maintain a positive working relationship with staff and customers.
4. Must be self-motivated, able to work effectively with little or no supervision.

Lilly Theater Assistant

Enrty Gate Position

Activity: Ticketing
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Works with the public in a variety of ways, from taking tickets, checking membership cards, distributing theater tickets.
2. Provides exceptional customer service daily. Solves customer problems whenever possible.
3. Maintains excellent knowledge of the museum and its events, exhibits, programs, publications, activities, staff and community involvement. Communicates to supervisor customer concerns and questions.
4. Listens and responds to various visitor comments and concerns. Passes this information on to supervisors.
5. Provides assistance to visitors who may need information on safety and special needs or emergency situations.
6. Welcomes and helps visit planning with quests. Greets visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
1. Must demonstrate teamwork in working closely with staff.
2. Must consider the visitor a top priority in the organization and must have the skills to effectively handle customer questions and concerns.
3. Must have a consistently friendly, professional approach with visitors.

Member/Donor Events Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Activity: Member/Donor Events Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Help host and facilitate member/donor events held during specific times throughout the calendar year.
2. Direct arts and crafts activities.
3. Welcome and greet arriving guests.
4. Help direct guests and answer questions.
1. Available for early evening hours - 4:30 – 8 p.m. – during event days held throughout the year.
2. Must attend event training before it begins (often includes a light supper).
3. Be flexible and able to adapt to changing conditions to assist with various themed activities for the event.
4. Have basic knowledge of museum.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to direct activities.
2. Able to interact with members and donors.
3. Able to hear guests to answer questions.
4. Able to facilitate activities and jobs may require small motor skills.
5. Minimal physical ability but some activities may require standing for periods of time.
Availability:
Evening events (usually Fridays) periodically throughout the year from 4:30 – 8 p.m.
Events may also be held early Saturday mornings from 8 -10 a.m. – before the museum opens.
African American Celebration Event
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Various
Activity: African American Celebration Event
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Help staff activities during special days held throughout the year to celebrate African American events.
2. Assist visitors with arts and crafts activities.
3. Host various areas to enhance themes of the special events.
4. Help direct visitors and answer questions.
1. Basic knowledge of history behind special events (training will provide some background information).
2. Able to volunteer on the celebrations days/evenings at specific times during the year.
3. Must attend any scheduled training sessions.
4. Must be flexible and able to adapt to variety of activities.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to see to direct activities.
2. Able to speak and interact with guests.
3. Able to hear guests in order to answer questions.
4. Able to facilitate activities that may require small motor skill.
5. Able to stand to staff various activities. (Some activities can be hosted while sitting.)
Availability:
Events usually held on specific African American celebration days. Some events will be held during regular museum hours: 10 – 5 p.m. AM or PM shifts available. Some events may be held during early evenings 4:30 – 8 p.m.

Curious Scientific Investigators/Museum Friend Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Various
Activity: Curious Scientific Investigators/Museum Friend Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Work as member of CSI team to provide quality self guided experiences for 3rd graders.
2. Guide students through museum focusing on specific topics and exhibits.
3. Model good question and investigation skills to 3rd Graders.
4. Provide excellent customer service to all visitors.
1. Must have a willingness to help children think like scientists and enjoy science.
2. Must be patient and flexible to work one on one with students.
3. Strong personal skills needed, especially in guidance of children
4. Must be available Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at least two Tuesdays per month.
5. Do not need science background to participate.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to see and supervise children and activities; required to view educational material and signage.
2. Able to communicate in front of students, required to hold one-on-one conversations with students.
3. Able to use small magnifying lens and opening small bags.
4. Able to walk around the museum with students.
Availability:
Tuesdays (Sept - May) 9 a.m. – noon.
Pre-School Class Assistant
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Museum Classrooms
Activity: Pre-School Class Assistant
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Assist teacher as needed in classes for 3 to 6 years old.
2. Help guide children through class activities including art and crafts.
3. Escort children to restroom if needed.
4. Assist teacher on museum visit if included in activities.
5. Help with classroom preparations.
1. Enjoy pre-school children.
2. Ability to sit on floor.
3. Ability to be patient and let children follow their own agenda while in class.
4. Ability to be cheerful and friendly under any circumstance.
ADA Requirements:
1. Able to see children and arts and crafts.
2. Able to instruct and speak with youth.
3. Able to hear and respond to questions.
4. Able to bend and stoop over to pre-school size children.
5. Able to sit on floor.
Availability:
Tuesday – Sunday most days per month.
Shifts: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and/or 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. shifts.

Special School Programs Facilitator
Starts: March 1st, 2009
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Location: Various
Activity: Special School Programs Facilitator
Essential Responsibilities/Primary Activities:
1. Host activity stations throughout the museum during festival programs.
2. Direct arts and craft activities.
3. Help with set-up and break-down for activity stations.
1. Attend training sessions for each festival program.
2. Be available to volunteer during festival programs held five to six times during school year.
3. Be knowledgeable about subject matter of festival programs (reference materials available at trainings).
ADA Requirements:

Availability:
